Areas of study (up to Cycle 40 – a.y. 2024–2025)

The PhD is divided into four intercultural and multidisciplinary areas of study:

  1. Europe’s Founding Myths in the Arts and Literature;
  2. German Studies;
  3. Language, Literature and Philology;
  4. Linguistics and Oriental Studies.

Goals

The course aims to train scholars and researchers for academia and the world of work.

The PhD programme’s four areas of study follow a skills-based approach. The subjects tackled in the lectures enable the doctoral students to acquire basic epistemological competences, specific disciplinary competences and soft skills.

1. The Europe’s Founding Myths of in the Arts and Literature area of study sets out to promote a centre for higher education and advanced comparative research. Covering studies in the history of French, German and Italian culture, it also explores the relationships between visual arts, music and literature.

2. The German Studies area of study aims to create a centre for higher education and advanced German studies along with studies of the history of Italian culture in its relations with German culture, harnessing the expertise acquired at the universities of Florence and Bonn.
The two international areas of study aim to create qualified academics and professional figures in the fields of  French and German studies, also with specific skills in Italian culture.

3. The third area of study (Language, Literature and Philology) aims to train specialists capable of orienting themselves within a network of interactions, intersections and correlations between different, interconnected but nonetheless specific, disciplines. The originality of the study programme therefore lies in its creating an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural background against which to project and interpret aspects of the individual scientific fields.

4. The Linguistics and Oriental Studies area of study aims to train scholars to master the theoretical and methodological tools for analysing different aspects of language. It includes specializations in formal linguistics; linguistics of the Germanic, Romance and Slavic languages; and the linguistic and philological study of Oriental languages. The training it provides prepares scholarly figures primarily for universities or other research institutions.
